Wow, cool ideas going around here. To expand on the actual decal producing process a little...
First off, I took photos of the knob graphics. Then I recreated(basically traced) them using Adobe Illustrator. This was the only designing I had to do since I only recovered that strip on my faceplate.
The teal color is the actual color of the vinyl material I used. (Vinyl at sign shops is just a colored sticker material that can be printed on or custom cut any shape out of.) Black was printed on teal vinyl in my case.
If I have a multi-colored design, In most cases, I will just use white vinyl and print all the colors. This way there are no limits to what colors you can use. This is most likely the way your decal would be produced.
When you bring in your design to a sign shop, tell them you'd like a vinyl decal. When they see your design they will best be able to decide what printing process to use. It is best to give them a digital file of the actual artwork. Just save the file on a cd or flash drive, or email it.
Where I work, a faceplate decal should only cost you around $20, just to give you an idea. Let me know if there are any other questions!
I used 3M Super77 spray adhesive for re-tolexing my head and cab. I've tried the "tolex" glue on other cabs and it was a lot more frustrating for me than the spray. I also sanded my stuff down with a rough 100 or 150 grit sandpaper to help make the bond stronger.
