I don't know, but my RV50 rules. I'm very happy with it and don't want to change it's sound. I like the 6v6's. I've never liked EL34's as much. A bit middy.

I think that is a bit farcical to say, at least when applied to the all amps everywhere. It maybe true for Matamp, I'm not saying that it's wrong in as far as certain amps go, I like the 6v6s in my Tweed.

I just have reached this strange nirvana of tone awareness recently that has made me realize that there will always be someone out there who can get great tone out of what I would have thought would be the crappiest combination of gear imaginable.

The Vox AC30 is famous for a reason, sure, but is it the end all of great tone? For some, heck yes. For others, meh.

I love 6v6s in some amps, but as for anything being tonally superior, well, I think that it's a bit subjective. And because it's subjective, as with most points in art, it has no absolute truth, only relative truths. :)

*snaps fingers in beatnik-style at his own depth of mental ability* ;)

i was checking out this venus 6 online the other day. FWIW it said "6V6GTs are well known to have spectacular tone, and excellent reliability, rivaling the classic yet unstable EL-84."

I don't know if I buy the "unstable el84" thing, but that amp looks pretty cool.

Right. And poly is superior to cotton because it doesn't shrink in the dryer.

I liked the Mesa Blue Angel alot. It had a combination of El84's and 6V6's.
Just a beautiful clean tone.Too bad they discontinued that amp,it was great.
I don't believe anyone can make a blanket statement about one type of tube being superior or non superior.I have been in love with all of them at one time or another.Just depends on which one I happen to be playing :D
If you think that El84's are Bull$hit then check out a Victoria Victorilux :wink:If I am not mistaken the Matchless DC30 uses EL84, one of the best amps I have ever played.

As the Yankee's found out! Ha!
I like the 6v6's. They are somewhere between the El84 and the 6l6.

Talking cleans I believe Dave Green's statement to be correct.

Think they're different tonally rather than superior. I've got amps with both, and I like both...

If they said 6L6 I might agree with them.

Purely personal preference, IMO. Both tubes have created plenty of famous tones. To say one is "tonally superior" is a bit of a stretch. It's dependent on the type of music you play and the tone you want.

6V6's are usually associated with lower watt Fender amps like the Champ, the Tweed Deluxe, Deluxe Reverb, Princeton, etc. Legendary amps for sure, though the larger Fenders like the Bassman, Super Reverbs and Twins used 6L6's. They have nice cleans and a sweet breakup.

EL-84's drove the legendary Vox AC-15's and AC-30's, and have been used in many lower wattage amps since. Their cleans aren't as big sounding, but they have a nice chime and smooth breakup.

I like them both, and they both serve their purpose.

Dave Green now works for Hayden amps.

My pal who owns a music store played one of their new amps at Frankfurt show .....the Hayden MOFO.......30 watter.

He played it for 60 seconds and ordered one for himself. Believe me he is as picky as they come.

I have no idea what valves are in it but I do know Dave and he has always hated EL84's! Maybe he's changed his mind!
