TT differences

Post by Ayin1 » Mon Mar 23, 2009 9:27 am

Two weeks ago, I bought a second hand TT, made in Korea. Fell in love with it instantly, but since I play stereo, I wanted another.
So, yesterday, I got a second one. New, made in China. In terms of sound, I couldn't tell them apart, but the new one in noticably less loud than the Korean.

Any similar experiences?

Theoretically they should be identical besides the power switch?

Maybe there is a slight difference, but it may also be caused by different tubes etc. I don't think a 500 dollar amp sells with higher quality valves so the previous owner might have put JJ's or something like that in it.

I have no clue what else it could be.
I play bass.

Could be the tubes?

I'd guess tubes as well.

My Korean had JJ's when I bought it.

Ok, I finally got new tubes for the new chinese. A big change: it sounds much fatter, louder, it really keeps up with the korean one. I'll open up the latter to see what tubes are in that.
The chinese also got lost in the mix compared to the korean, no matter if I turned it louder, now they were both there. A huge sound, the volume was just above three, and I was plenty loud at the rehearsal. I played live with the same volume.

I put a Tung Sol selected in V1, a JJ 12ax7 in V2 and JJ's in the poweramp.

I boost with the MXR CAE 402, and use some fuzz (MJM London 2) for solos. Best sound I've ever had.

Yeah after putting in some new JJ EL's and new Tad 12ax7's my Terror came to life, but yet is it just that it came back to life with a fresh set of tubes....

that is a sexy setup! I used to run a TT set to a clean tone through a 2x12 and a TT set to dirty through a 1x12 right next to each other and it looked awesome and sounded awesome!

Thanks. Both TT's are dirty, one with gain on 6, the other on 7, and most of the time I boost that with 20db. Without the boost, and with a volume knob, I have loads of dynamics. The Fender is for clinically clean, now matter how hard you hit the strings.

Hi Jan,

nice to see you resolved the volume issues and that you are happy with the tt you bought from me. Enjoy!

So, Are you running 2 Tiny Terrors in stereo?
if you want to add some 'spice' to the sound you should use a different amp... mmm, perhaps a different set of tubes can do the trick... or a different cab... sh*t, now I'm intrigued. How does it sounds? Can you upload some sound demos? Thanks.
Best Regards.
