I've just been asking the same question. I'd have liked an AS80 as Jamison recommended, but the better older Ibanez semis are tough to find used. I went with a Korean made Epi Riviera and got an absolute steal for £195, which had a fair few dings. Cleaned and set up, now a great guitar.
If you can find an old Ibanez, great, if not, the Korean Epi Rivieras and Casinos are worth trying out.

PS Another vote for the Tokai here

Save a little bit more for a used Japanese Tokai, which can be had for very reasonable sums are *are* are good as a *most* Gibson-produced 335s, as well as being more consistent in QC.
To be honest, any Korean/Chinese makes, including Tokai, are much of a muchness in terms of quality. I don't mean to diss your guitar Jamie, but Tokai's great reputation comes from their Japanese stuff really, which is a whole different ballgame - like comparing current Squiers to Fenders.

No offence taken - my Tokai SG is Japanese and it's fantastic.
But unfortunately I couldn't afford another Japanese model and i'm very happy with my korean 335.

The price range is restrictive. I've tried the Heritage version of the 335 and love it to death (better than any of the current Gibsons), but the price of the used ones have been going up over the past two years on e-bay. So, they may be out of your price range.
I liked the Ibenez I tried. I would agree on the dot Epiphones and then drop some Sheptones in it. Make sure you play it first to see if it is put together and set up correctly.

The Japanese models are excellent.
With respect, the Korean and Chinese models are different things as the Korean plants were often set up as joint ventures with the Japanese factories, whereas the Chinese ones are on their tod. The Koreans were therefore pretty good in a lot of cases... approaching Japan quality.
