I might be wrong, but I thought nice big transformers were a factor in good bass handling - to fit it all into the TT-size chassis, aren't they going to have to make some compromises there?

That is where the class D thing comes in. For starters you don't need output transformers with solid state amps. (And though you could make a valve class D amp output section, this ain't that!)

But the big deal about class D is the very high efficiency. (Realistically 90% is achievable!) That means much more of the electricity used is turned into useful signal, much less into heat. Meaning you don't need such heavy power transformers or other components, with heavy heatsinks to protect them.

Here is some stuff on class D amps if you are interested:

I wonder what the prices will be like. I'm imagining all three new heads are likely to be around twice the price of the current model, maybe the bass one will be slightly lower.

I'm especially wondering about the Dual Terror, because I'm almost certain that will be in the same price region as the Rocker 30 head and the two look fairly similar on paper - though the Dual Terror might actually be more usable with 2 dirty channels and the 7/15/30w power switching! If it was much cheaper, it'd probably end up replacing the original TT altogether as I don't see why anyone would want the single channel version if it's not much more for the new one with so much more versatility - and if you're obsessive about pure, simple single channel amps you'd probably shell out for the handwired one.

Humbuckermusic.com has the dual terror in stock if you'd like to see what they're pricing it in USD. I'd imagine the Terror Bass would be around the same price point. The big question for me though is what would it sound like. It'd still probably be less than these:

Interesting, that figure in dollars was a lot less than I was expecting. I'm sure they'll sell shedloads at that price, it's very well specced for the money.

I quite liked that the one bass head Orange made was all tube, so I am a bit disappointed in Orange about this.

There is nothing wrong with SS bass heads, but a million other companies make them so I wonder why Orange didn't just keep their reputation for making great tube heads.

Bass player magazine just did a blip about the Bass Terror and the word is that more changes are coming to Orange's bass lineup- whatever that may mean. AD400 anyone ? How about an 8x10? Just dreaming...
