Is it just me.....
Moderator: bclaire
I tookk my friends strat in to check it over for her, set it up etc. But after spending a good couple of hours on it, I just couldn't get the action to sit right/as low as i would like...
Is this normal, I mean the strats action is higher than my tele's.....?

You should be able to get the action similar to a Tele's... but if it has the 7.25" radius, there's a slightly higher action that needs to happen anyway to avoid fretting out on string bends.
If it's a tremelo Strat, you might have to do some work with the tension on the claw in back too... depending.
Otherwise, maybe the neck needs to be shimmed or adjusted to get that lower action.

Darn, i figured it wasn't quite right. I'll open up the trem tomorrow, see whats happening inside. Cheers Billy!!!

<br />yeah if the trem springs are too loose the saddles will be too high and strings will not have good seat. personally i would block the trem.

Yeah - I used to always block a strat trem. Now I just use 5 springs and lock that sucker down tight! That way if I get an inkling for using the trem bar - I still can, but you get all the advantages of blocking (I like the bridge flush to the body - I think it helps the body resonate better) - plus I think maybe having the cavity clear where the trem block is located might effect the tone some - I can't say for sure because frankly, my ear just ain't that sensitive anymore.

I'm with Greg... 4 or 5 springs in the back to get the trem flush against the body - but you can still use the whammy if you want.
Take a look at the nut as Andy said, check the relief in the neck - it might be off - and check the saddle heights.
Don't know how low your Tele is, but you should be able to get it down to a decently playable height.

Leo made the tele and strat from an engineers point of view (he didn't play) and so it is just a matter of following logic through.
1. Is the neck set correctly - put a long straight edge on it and see where the string height projects to at the bridge. He developed the 3 screw micro tilt in the 70s so hated by players at the time but the old fashioned shim method is very effective if a bit more trial end error. I've used bits of hard plastic as shims in the past like yogurt pots [:0] . If you have an engineers supplies nearby you can get graded metal shims in all sized (some motor garages stock them too).
2. Is the nut cut correctly. More often a problem with new Gibsons but 10 minuets getting 'U' shaped slots of the correct width that slope away from the fingerboard edge and removing excess off the top so the string sits about 60% in the groove. Lube the nut.
3. The Bridge and trem. The final and easy bit. Everything is easily adjustable with a screw so with the rest in order this is just a tweek to set the height curve and intonation.

Here we go; three, four...
I think it's fairly common with strats but you should be able to get it lower. I mean my VHR 62 has a 9.5 radius neck and the frets have been dressed and I still can't get my high e lower than 2mm at the 12th with a capo at the 1st. Luckily this is the height I like but still...
I have to say I'm the opposite with the trem- I like it with 3 springs and floating, I've never noticed more sustain from having it blocked but that's just me.
Man I love strats

It's not getting more sustain from blocking a trem, or having it flush with the body, it's the tuning stability...

This might help!

Personally, I prefer the trem set so it's flat against the body (I think the height mentioned on the Fender website is about 3mm).
