Since when was the Tele not a mainstream instrument? There's a ton of tele players out there, and it has a reputation as good as the Strats.

The Tele is not the best guitar out there... not for me anyways. That award is present to my Gibson ES-335.

Agreed, according to Fenders statistics, the telecaster cummulatively outsold the strat way into the mid 80's then when the indie scene blew up in the 90's, the tele became fashionable again although I don't have those stats in my head.

The Strat is a truely versatile instrument that responds well to a player with good technique. The Les Paul is a great guitar that sounds good in the hands of novice and expert alike. The telecaster is les versatile than the Strat, but again comes into it's own in the hands of accomplished players.

I've contemplated getting a nice tele for years, I guess I should get off the fence a do it. Many old pros think a good tele and a good 335 will give you access to all the tone you could need as a professional player. Well I've started, I've got a 335 so I just need a tele and learn to play :D
Here we go; three, four...

Definitely prefer Teles to Strats. Don't care about third pickups. Especially love Teles with a single humbucker to pair with the single-coil -- gives you the classic Tele twang in one setting, with a richer, Gibson-ish sound in another setting, and a nice combination in the middle setting that cleans up real good.

As to whether I prefer my SG or Tele? Couldn't pick. Tele's pups are more diverse, as described above. On the other hand, the Gibson pups aren't as noisy as the Tele's single-coil. Prefer the feel of the maple neck on the Tele, but the SG's shorter scale is nice for someone like myself who has smaller hands. The Tele is easier to string, but the Gibson is infinitely easier to setup because Tele bridges, for all their importance to the one, are really frustrating for intonation.

Like David said... gotta have more than one tool in the toolbox.

My Mexican-made Tele is the nicest guitar I've ever owned by a longshot. The others are literally not worth mentioning and I plan to buy a 335-style guitar at some point to but anything other than that would just be collecting more toys...which is a lot of fun but probably unnecessary.

And my Tele sounds soooo much better through my Orange!!!

Les Paul says( and I agree )most people listen with their eyes.
To me a Telly is ok, but a one trick pony....and its butt ugly.
Les Pauls & Stratocaster are a thing of beauty.

- among the most durable guitars, and easy to repair and modify.

- cuts like a knife, but it feels so right (BRYAN ADAMS QUOTE FTL)

- only a tele sounds like a tele. strat and LP are generic sounding and similar to many, many other types of guitar. Probably because those basic designs are copied so much but it doesn't change the fact.
A few reasons why Les Pauls and SGs and 335s etc. aren't perfect:

1. They don't have 3 pickups
2. Some are too damn heavy
3. Humbuckers don't sound as good as single coils
4. Most don't have wang bars

In short....ain't no perfect guitars...not perfect for everyone.

Actually my SG has 3 single coil pickups, is made of ash wood and so very light, and I'm adding a Bigsby to it in the near future. Therefore I own the perfect guitar and consequently I win.
