I could be in for a 2002 SG Classic on the bay if the price is right.

Anything to look for in a guitar from that period, or of that age? The seller is claiming 'light home use' only.

I'd just look for the normal SG breaks and cracks, at the neck joint and at the headstock. The Classics have the later style longer neck joint if I remember correctly, so there's less of a worry with cracks. With newer production Gibbys, quality control is sketchy though, IMO. But in general P90 + SG = awesome.

Thanks for that. One more thing I picked up from the seller - the end of the serial number on the headstock is a bit difficult to read. Is that a sign of anything?

Not necessarily... I've seen some Gibsons where the numbers aren't very clear, like it's hard to discern between, say, a 6 and an 8. But I'd watch out if it looks like it was altered or faked, too.

I'm excited.....the price is great at the moment, but three days to go. I'm hoping that the recession and the time of year will depress the market!

Hey Blainy,

I have had a Gibson SG Classic (2005) for a few years now, and it is a sensational guitar! The P90's cover alot of territory IMO, and the quality is second to none, absolutley perfect (on mine at least)

I hope you can get it for a good price and its in good nick!!

Hi Alasdair-

On SGs the neck joint is always the most important thing to look at.

If there are any cracks around the neck joint then walk away unless you're talking about a giveaway price.

Headstock breaks are an issue for any Gibson too.

Get the serial number and call Gibson Customer Service, the number is on the website.

They will confirm if the serial number is right or if the guitar is bogus.

Good luck.

Went for slightly more than I wanted to pay (I bid #500), but I think the guy was auto-bidding up higher. I'm in for another one though - a bit more 'played-in'.
