tube change on my tt

ok, so this old tone generator i picked up had a couple of 12ax7 tubes - an old lowrey (60's original)and an old mazda (70's replacement). just for divilment i swapped out the stock tubes from the terror and.... not half as nice as the stock tubes. i got a lot more gain, a darker and thicker tone from my tele but not really a sound that i can use all the time. it also increased in hum slightly when the gain was increased. when i put the stock tubes back in they chimed like a bell and i was back to the sound i know and love. i even apologised to my terror for foolishly thinking i could improve on perfection..
