So I'm on the hunt for a distortion/fuzzy/overdrive, insane would be awesome. Insane that is still articulate with open chords is a must. I'm into jangley and shoegazey sorts of stuff, so I need something that can function in those realms. At the moment I'm thinking Penny Pedals' Fingerprint: http://www.pennypedals.com/index.php?page=fingerprint-2 which seems to have pretty articulate open chordings. I like arpeggios too, by the way. I guess my thing is that it's $180 USD, which is pricey when you convert to CDN dollars and add shipping. I was looking at Devi Ever's stuff, but none of them seem particularly adept at articulation of open chords.
So does anyone have any awesome and possibly cheaper alternatives?

"Insane" and "articulate" arrent always friends with fuzz pedals. I guess just play around, but you can always try the old mainstay, the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi (A la Jack White, Smashing Pumpkins) or maybe a BBE Free Fuzz. Course if you want REALLY insane, check out a ZVEX Fuzz Factory (main distortion sound of Matt Bellamy from Muse). ONly prob is that those run high in price, with the handpainted one nearly 3** bucks, or the cometically-inferior-otherwise-identical Vexter at like 175.

This is THE best pedals in the world for your style! A bit expensive, but so worth it!

bythepowerofgrayskull- To be honest I don't like any of those pedals. The Big Muff is great for heavy power chords, but otherwise makes an amp sound like it's hurling, the free fuzz is pretty dull to my ears and the Fuzz Factory sounds great for many applications, just not mine. I agree it's kind of a contradiction- getting insane and articulate in the same pedal, but I think it can be done.

Magnus Pettersen- I'm having some trouble finding sound samples or prices of these pedals on the site. Perhaps I'm blind, am I missing them? It's a pretty minimal site.

I say it again and again, Barber Trifecta is the most articulate fuzz for chording I've heard. It's also a reasonable price.

With the boost engaged it gets kinda Fuzzy, but not quite. Interesting sound. You just might like it...

Foef, I actually really like the Mudhoney and in the future I may consider getting one, but it's not really what I'm looking for right now.

Magnus, I'll shoot them an email. Is there any particular pedal you had in mind when you recommended the company? Have you any hands on experience with the pedals?

I've tested almost all of the production models, and I would go for the Fuz Fabrik. I don't think the pedal is mentioned on the site, but you can see it on their MySpace.

MSP - have you tried the Trifecta?

Are you looking specifically for a fuzz, or a distortion that can give you high levels of gain? If so, something that might fit the bill is an Okko Diablo. Expensive and hard to get your hands on, but has good articulation and levels of gain.

LeonC has one and might be good enough to record you some chords at some point!

I've been looking out for one for a while, but with the £ sliding against the Euro, they're too blimmin' expensive, even used!

Phew, Joe the price of the Okko Diablo is way out of my league. It definitely seems like a versatile pedal and I can see why people would be willing to pay that much for it. I don't think fuzz is what I want to limit myself to entirely, but something with a slightly insane character I guess is where my interests are. No, I haven't tried the Trifecta, I'm basing my opinion on their mp3s. There isn't really any access to pedals that are Boss around here for demoing purposes, so I have to rely on the internet.

Teddy, the Trifecta definitely seems like it does the bread and butter fuzzes really well.
