is it ok to put you amp on standby when it is not connected to a cabinet ?

for example while other bands are playing at a show and you want your valves to warm up.
Is it ok to just leave the amp on standby in the corner while not connected to a speaker cabinet ?

cheers.

I don't think I would ever leave an amp on when it is not plugged in to a cab. In doing this you can probably blow the output transformer, maybe not when on standby, but I would never risk something like that. Unless you have a backup amp just in case, but always make sure there is a load on the amp, I don't even plug my amp in until the cab is connected to the head and the guitar is plugged in as well. I may be mistaken in this but I still wouldn't risk it.

Theory says you would be fine. Practice says, why take a stupid risk, just a nudge of a single switch and bye bye OP tranny and possibly more.

When on standby, and amp only has heater elements being energised with voltage to warm the output valves up. Taking off standby applies hundreds of volts across the plates and you have full power available in your loudspeaker.... or a serious problem.
Here we go; three, four...

Sooner,

I just went into my profile and turned signatures off. Now I can't see anyone's signatures, but at least Ohara's sig isn't making the threads wider than my laptop screen anymore.

And like others said, I NEVER turn on an amp without a load attached, standby or not.

Thanks. Yeah his sig screws up my 19" monitors too. Sucks though to have to turn them all off.

ditto what everybody else said - all your amp really needs is a few minutes warm-up time

probably better to play a cold-ish amp than risk an explosion

also - O'HARA - PLEASE shorten your sig pic!!!!

Forgive me all, didn't mean to cause havoc with everyones monitors. Still new at putting things in the sig pics, I did shorten it down to just one pic, won't happen again. If I would have read the thread again before now I would have done it sooner, and Kittenface I did get your email today and immediately changed it upon reading.

Thanks my original intention was to do a panoramic view of my basement, but it didn't turn out quite as planned.

Actually I'm starting to like having all the sigs turned off. Makes for a lot less scrolling up and down too! [:p]
