I think my main concern is that the Bassman is already super bright, what will using a Top Boost-esque pedal do? I wish the stores here sold more than just Boss pedals.

Yeah, you nailed it there. I built a clone of an early period JTM 45 which is essentially the same as the Bassman you have and it'll cut glass. When its cranked, up the harshness tends to go but at lower volume it really bite your ears. You'll hear of people cutting the so called bright cap in the tone stack circuit which removes a lot of the harshness. Your amp might take top boost pedals a bit better with that gone. Any tech will know what that means.

I think I'm going to see how I like the brightness as it is stock for now. I think I'll probably go with an overdrive pedal that isn't particularly bright, hoping to even things out. I'm a rhythm player so for me the important thing is being able to play open chords that are still articulate.

I use a Crunch Box with my Bassman and it sounds unbelievable. Pretty much nails the JCM800 thing IMO. Give it a try. The '59 Bassman is the amp that I will never sell. I have been through Traynors, Oranges, Egnaters and a few others but the Bassman isn't going anywhere. Nice buy!!!

Thanks, it's a pretty kicking piece of kit. I'm happy with it. The JCM800 sound is not really my bag, but that's cool that you've found your thing.
I just threw my friend's Ernie Ball bass through, very Joy Division sounding actually! I don't want to give the bass back ha.

When I had my SLP, I would jump the channels as described above, dial in a good clean tone, and this was my basic signal chain. Gtr/Wah/Maxon OD808 set for clean boost/ TS9 full gain / flange or chorus / analog delay / amp. At times I'd pull the clean boost, and add a dist. or fuzz.. The Bassman / Plexi amps love pedals!!! Try a late 80's / early 90's MIJ Ibanez TS9. Maxon has reissued them with original chips, in several different versions. I like the OD9. The od808 is nice, and has more distortion, but the OD9 is smoother/warmer. IMHO

congrats msp - i almost bought that amp - but got a great deal on my orange - which is a blessing and a curse... because if had bought the bassman i would not have ever found this forum to waste my time and annoy people on
ps - looking forward very much to the new bunnymen album - the single is not earth shattering but it's not too shabby either

Ow...
Here's a thing you might want to try.
That is, if you're into using both inputs...
Connect both inputs via a reverb pedal. Friend of mine does that with a very nice result.
So he goes into the normal input 1, then out from normal 2, to the reverb unit, and out from that to the bright input 1. You can also try it the other way around, if the reverb sounds too bright...
Grtz, Bert.

Hi MSP,
I am in a similar situation. I have a Tiny Terror Combo, which I like, but I miss that Fender clean. A guy is offering to trade me straight across the TT combo for the 59 BM LTD.
Are you still happy with the deal? Do you miss the TT?
I am also concerned that the Fender will be too loud for home use?
Andrew

How can you not like a Bassman?! I have an old one around here waiting on my restoration. A Twin Reverb also. The Bassman is great as are a lot of old tube design bass amps to play guitar through. I've also sold a Traynor 1x15 bass amp, which I restored, to a local guitarist who sold his Marshall to get it and he loves it. Not a lick of trouble like the Marshall was either. I had an Ampeg 1x15 here that sounded pretty sweet with a guitar cranked through it too. I know that you've tried it or heard it earlier, but give the RAT a try for an OD, distortion box. the You Dirty Rat has a nice, warm and fuzzy tone as well, as little or as much as you like.

Hey, you got a great deal. The bassman is one of the better amps you could own. I would love to find someone to take the tt off my hands.
