Good Choice Brian, I never found a Fender amp that does a brilliant gain yet. Have always used pedals.... Enjoy and kill a few brain cells while your at it...:D

Damn my RV sounded good at practice last night!!! Great amp. I have tried so many, Bogner, Fuchs, VHT, Dr. Z, ENGL, Splawn, Egnater.........the RV gain channel is the best by far.

I'll give you it in bite size chunks as I am only just getting to know it!

Firstly....when I fired it up I was really disapointed. It sounded very hard and brittle ....I was kind of gutted because it was probably going to be this or the Supersonic as a different giggable flavour from my Matamp.

Then I had a bright idea![:0]
I'd never seen anyone play it in the shop and so the speakers must be virtually unplayed. So I linked two Matamp cabs together for 8ohms and swapped the internal speaker in to the 8ohm so I could run them at the same time. Both cabs are loaded with very broken in Celestion Century Vintages.

I am playing it with my 59 LP copy in my sig. I have to be able to get a great clean sound with humbuckers or it goes back!! That's more important to me than the overdrive..and I've read so many complaints about the clean sound on here.
I was sure I could get a good clean sound with my Tele or Strat but the LP is the decider.

HUGE difference. I mean HUGE! Instant change of tone. Warm and clear and very chimey.
AS much as I resisted I started to smile.....

The clean channel tone controls obviously interact to alter the mid.....I think I have the bass on around 6/7 and treble on around 7/8....not sure sat here typing but it is a really clean and clear sound. Very like my Matamp actually! I mean it's closer to my Matamp than a Fender or Marshall.
If you do the normal "Fender thing" and have bass on around 3 and treble on about 5 then the mid is pronounced and it's a bit muddy....but increase those tone controls and the mid cleans up.

I tried the effects loop with my CC delay and it works fine. Haven't really listened for tone sucking yet but it seems to be quiet......I can't use the CC in my Matamp because there is an awful earth loop thingy...but it's fine in the RV.

So far so good..and I know I can improve the clean channel....;)

Yes I did! It sounded great but there was something about the clean sound that I couldn't totally live with....maybe I hadn't twigged the interactiveness of the tone controls! ;)

I might never admit to that but it's bloody good! :D

Jeff...I don't use a lot of gain. There is a sweet spot around 11 oclock where the second stage gain kicks in....with the master on about 8 it is still very open and crunchy. Once I go beyond that compression starts as well as the gain increasing.
I would love to widen that spot up a bit...have you tried any lower gain valves in the dirty channel?

So far I'm impressed....and it blows away the Supersonic! The clean channel has actually surprised me...once you understand the eq..nice and chimey even with a LP!
That's cool!:)

Nah, I've only put back EH tubes and biased the power amp just like the ones I replaced (well, as close as I could get, it's crazy the variance on a 'matched' set of tubes). Depending on the music I vary the gain from 1100-0200. The amp really opens up and comes into it's own w/ the volume in the 1100+ range.

Congrats!
Glad you like it!

The OR50 turned out to be the one for me,
really glad the RV50 us working out so well for you.
Think one of the Matamps needs to take a vacation now
in Arizona!
