I've been taking guitar lessons for a couple of years now from a very talented musician. He really is good. My trouble is, is that I feel like I've hit a learning block. I will go to my lesson on Monday afternoon and he will ask me what I want to work on. I seem to be going through phases, Gilmour, Hendrix, Page now Slash. I get started on a new tune, learn a chunk of it BUT other than "Comfortably Numb" I never seem to learn a tune from beginning to end. Its like I get bored or something. I then move off and just start to noodle. Is it just me or have others gone through this?
Oh yea I finally bought my new Jeff Beck Strat I'll try to post some pics tonight.

I was like that until I started playing with other musicians. The good thing about the people you named is they all are primarily blues / rock players, so a lot of the stuff they do individually is related via a common thread.

I've always advocated branching away from learning every song note for note until its robotic. It's good to "learn from masters", and playing their stuff is a great way to do it, but eventually you have to learn your own style, and like others said, incorporate what you've learned from playing their stuff and come up with your own spin.

I think you guys hit the nail on the head. I need to jam with other musicians and see where it takes me. I'm not very confident as a player, I still feel like I make too many mistakes. But that been said the mistakes I make are while I am trying to emulate someone else...

jamming with other musicians is one of the most creative processes that you can go through when playing guitar. You can learn alot of new ideas on how to play the same song that you have been playing only they play it differently and can open your eyes and ears to new tones and options. As far as learning a song from start to finish it is a great thing to do but if you are going to cover the song with your band try to do it differently, try to make it your own like Damienwatt au stated people can buy the cd if they want to hear the original but if you can play the song in a different way and bring them into your headspace it is pretty cool.
