The only reasonable answer to this is 'try both and see what you think' - particularly relevant to JCM800s as there were many variations, with some being highly prized and others considered pretty duff.

In your situation if I had to choose between the JCM800 and the RV50 I definitely would go for the JCM800.
But really, I wouldn't look twice to neither of these amps.
Instead I would look into a real tool for the occation. Something like Mesa, Diezel, Bad Cat, among many others..
Something american hi-gain.

id prefer EL34s for that crunchy pom sound
i dislike mesa, there expensive, and you dont get bang for your buck
but hmm, i spose

Well, the bottom line is, you need to play and listen to those amps...
I think the Mesa or the Orange is going to be the amp to suit you- either that or a modern Marshall like the 4 channel Marshall- very versatile.

How about a Peavey 5150? Classic amp for what you want.
I'm not sure you'd want the Orange. If you're going for the traditional scooped sounds, you'll find it pretty hard going with a Rockerverb. A Marshall or the Peavey might be a much better bet.

EVH 5150III = great high gain head. Also look at Hughes & Ketner Triamp. Otherwise the Orange beats the Marshall ANY day of the week.

I am one of the metal guys here who swears by Orange, but the metal I play is more of a stoner/sludge. I have no problems getting a ball crushing heavy sound from my rockerverb 50, but it is a much more organic sound then say a Mesa. If you want more of that buzz saw sound for lots of runs, and progressive single note dancing with tons of gain, you might be better off with a Mesa, or a Krank. Both great amps IMO. Obviously, you need to A/B them to know for sure.
Also, another amp that isn't mentioned much, but I think sounds great for heavy music, is Laney. I have played a few and thought they had a really good base tone.

Unless the JCM 800 is modded, it definitely won't have enough gain for what you are looking for. The RV-50 is a lot more versatile. You can get metal type tones out of it, but I wouldn't say that is what it excels at. I agree with others on here, check out the Peavey 5150's, they are totally metal amps, and probably more in your price range.
