2x12 for small gigs 4x12 for large. I personally think any difference in sound is minute, and therefore, secondary to the amount of sound you actually need. Plus 4x12s look good but are hard to fit in my car.

4x12 ...

But I would love to have a 2x12 as 'extra' or home use ...

I have a 412 and am about to buy a second! I would prefer a combo over a head and 212 cab -- but that's just me. 41s are heavy but they sound awesome.

I personally think that with most bands playing clubs a 2x12 is better because it allows you to turn up louder, which makes up for the loss in air displacement. Like I said earlier right tool for the right job.

hey Im thinking about getting a cab and head in the future. I want to get a cab now because i dont have money for both now...I only have about 400-500 bucks now. I want to get a cab, I'll still be able to use it w/ my AD15. Should I get a 2x12 or 4x12, my amps loud enough...but I want better sound coverage because I'm going to be doing more gigs coming up, and I'm not going to be miked.

I was looking at avatar cabs, they look pretty solid and affordable. What speakers should I get, I was thinking V30s, but i havent yet compared different quality speakers to V30s before. I was thinking a 4x12 but if a 2x12 gives a full enough sound I'll get it and have more money towards a head, and they are more portable...what do you think?

Due to size, weight, and moving convenience I prefer 2x12 cabs. I've always used them, and i can't imagine any venue where a 2x12 wouldn't be enough. If the place is big enough, mic it up. I can't think of one venue i've played where a 2x12 wouldn't be loud enough, but a 4x12 would.

Plus i find that 2x12 closed back cabs in general have more bass thump to them than a 4x12, due to all the open air inside the cab and larger back.

However, there is a definite visual appeal to having a head sitting on a 4x12 behind you, much less a full stack of 2 4x12s.

In a perfect world (one where i was touring the planet, with an ulimited amount of money and cargo space) I would run my AD30TCH into a 4x12 on top of a 2x12 Orange cab, with the 2x12 on the bottom, miced up.

I've owned two different avatar speaker cabs, and they are excellent cabs for the price that compete favorably with higher priced cabs from name brand manufacturers. However, if you decide to sell them, the resale value is crap. I like V30's with the orange sound, but If i were to get another cab to compliment my PPC2x12, i would look into one loaded with some of the new emminence speakers. Possibly Governers, Private Jacks, or Wizards, or a mix of two of those. One of my avatar cabs was loaded with a combo of one Weber Blue dog and one Weber Silver bell, and it sounded amazing with my Orange head. I came really close to swaping those speakers out with the V30's in my Orange cab. Then i needed money real bad, and realized the resale value on the Webers was a lot more than the resale value on V30's.

If you're going for the closed back cab sound, I can't imagine a 2x12 ever sounding better than a comparable 4x12. Though for alot of things, an open backed 2x12 cab has a sound that a 4x12 just can't get. It all depends on what you're looking for.

I prefer 4x12's.

if you use a 2x12 cab how do u place it o you can hear yourself well, do u put it vertical, on its side, or do u put it on top of something or both?

My cab looks straight but when you remove the grille cover you can see it's really slanted.
