And how loud does it need be to sound good?

it is very very loud. to get a good solid "cranked tube amp" sound, the orange must be at about 3:00 on the volume control. but at 3 o' clock it is already way too loud for band situations. it starts breaking up at around 12 o' clock, so i usually play it at around 10 o'clock and use a pedal for overdrive. even then i drown the second guitar in the mix because this thing moves so much air. it just sounds huge.

im talking about non-master volume OR120s, obviously with a master volume control you can get the tone at lower volumes.

As loud as possible, the louder you can the best it sounds. I play it on 90% of volume
