I've thought about getting a treble clef on my right forearm and a bass clef on the left. It makes sense if you sit down at a piano. I haven't any tats yet so I figure it'd be something simple to start with.

i have a great idea for my first, (the only one that has stuck) but my GAS keeps getting in the way of getting it. it's the opening lyric from "Heart Cooks Brain" by Modest Mouse; "my brain's the burger, and my heart's the coal" but i still have yet to have someone draw it up. i definitely want it to look cartoony

either on each arm or either side of my chest.

"my brain's the burger"- an open-faced hamburger on a plate with a brain in place of a patty, the brain stem hanging off the edge of the plate.

i've had a hard time thinking of a visualization for "my heart's the coal", any ideas?

a buddy of mine has a tat on his back that says "Music is Life" in this bad ass typography.

although, anotehr guy i know got it the other way around "Life is Music" on his arm, obviously biting off of the other guy (same circle of people sort of). his font looked like IMPACT font, which is hideous, especially for body art.

i guess execution of the body art REALLY matters! and also if it fits the person

Ah Frick! Dude, I had just decided LAST NIGHT that I wanted to get two f-holes tattooed on the back of my upper arms. It's actually kind of stupid, my band played a show with a guy who had tattoos on the backs of his arms and I thought they were of something stupid like Scimitars or Knives or something. It got me to thinking and I was like, "It would be sweet to get F-Holes tattooed on the back of my arms." And then I took a closer look at his tattooes and that's what they were haha. I'm probably still going to get it done. My goal is to be a huge rockstar BAMF by Cornerstone Festival at the end of June... maybe I'll have the tattooes by then.

I've got Meg (my bands name) on my upper right arm.

Just below a little stickman in an egg entitled 'leon in an egg' lol

It's just a stupid little pointless drawing I did at school but it was still with me years later so I thought I'd get a tattoo of it. I've never regretted a tattoo but then they are quite personal to me. I don't really get people going into a parlour and picking one they think looks pretty. But then... why the hell not if you are up for it I guess.

I have a bunch of tattoos. Sign of a life questionably lived. For all of you thinking about the "f-hole" thing, please consider the source (Man Ray), as it is an oft-ripped-off thought fragment:

"The piece's title, Le Violon D'Ingres, could be translated from French in two ways. It could simply mean "Ingrid's Violin" - a reference to the stringed instrument shown on the woman's back - or it could be understood as "The Rape of Ingrid" - perhaps a Dadaist reference to the use of women as instruments or objects of pleasure."

That's the cool thing about tattoos. Any tattoo --no matter what it is-- could really and truly be made fun of by another person, so getting tattoos just because you want other people to like them is pointless. I drew half the tattoos I have myself, and the one on my back was freehanded by a friend of mine that's a tattoo artist. I agree with you about flash tattoos though; I think those are kind of lame, but that's my opinion. I think a tattoo should be your original idea instead of something you saw on a wall. Once you get a couple tattoos, they're really no big deal, and I can't really see ever regretting a tattoo, especally if you have more than one.
This reminds me of a story I heard from a buddy of mine when we were in the Navy. He said the guy that lived in the barracks room next to him at his first duty station in Pensacola came back one night and showed off this fresh, new tattoo he had just gotten. As soon as my buddy saw it, he knew it looked familiar for some reason. The guy that got it said he saw it in the flash book at the parlor and liked it(again, flash art = bad idea), so he got it. It was some weird little design or symbol, or something. My buddy still couldn't remember where he saw it, until. . . he was watching one of his pornos a few days later, and the girl in the porno that was getting worked through had it on her lower back! The tramp stamp! Ahhhhhhhh! As soon as my buddy saw that, he had to tell the guy, and better yet, show him. He said the guy was clearly upset, although he tried to brush it off and say it didn't bother him. But how could it not? It would sure as hell bother me!

That's the painting of the girl with F-holes on her back right? I saw that when I just google imaged it. that whole "rape of Ingrid" as opposed to "Ingrid's Violin" thing is interesting, however I wouldn't really be getting it because it is Ingrid's Violin or Rape. I would get F-Holes because music is a huge part of my life, and, in a way, resonates within me. I don't think just because someone else has a tattoo or it has a history doesn't mean you can't make it your own. How many people have guitars tattooed on their bodies? Same principle.

I hear you, and I truly think you should get whatever you want. I was simply trying to provide some judgement-free background to the cultural history of the impulse. Please take it FWIW. But for the sake of the discussion and to indulge your rationale (and to use a admittedly extreme example), just because you decide a swastika has a special meaning to you, doesn't mean it doesn't still have its old meaning to everyone else.

As it happens, I have three female friends who all have the Man Ray f-holes on their back. It's kind of like the post-modern feminist tramp-stamp [:0];)

Personally, I've always thought that three-to-a-side tuning pegs on my neck would be cool :o
