So far,
I like the idea of grabbing:
a) used Highway 1 Tele
b) G&L Asat
c) Epi Custom LP (with upgraded tuners and the Seymour Duncan Hot Rod Humbuckers Jazz neck JB Bridge)
d) Faded Gibson SG

I'd be careful with the Faded SGs, some of them have shotty workmanship, like sharp ends on the neck and frets feeling a bit unfinished. I'd say you definitely have to try before you buy one of those. All in all, you can't go wrong with any of those. My question is, how much clean or semi overdriven does your brother play? An Epi LP might not be the best choice unless he's consistantly playing with a fair amount of distortion.
Ok, faded SG off the list, but PRS SE in its place for consideration.

When I read the question I was thinking PRS SEs right off - have him play some - they play great!
Are the PRS SEs made in Korea by World Music Inc?
Anybody know if Samick = World Music Inc.?

Not certain - but who cares?!? They are built great and sound very good too. And they are warranted out of Maryland, I believe.

When I started playing years ago I started out playing punk rock, and I had a MIM strat and I loved it. I'm sure he could find one that isn't $600 and he could put that money toward better tuners or even different pick ups. I'm not sure how everyone else feels about this, but my buddy has an american strat and he loves it but he hated the humming he would get when the song was over and they were getting ready to play the next song. He invested in noisless single coil pickups and he LOVES them. (Just a thought if he got a guitar that wasn't maxing out his budget already)
Personally though, after my strat got stolen and I got my LP, I found it was easier to palm mute at fast speeds with the arched body. The flat body of the strat always made my hand cramp up more... (I know I know, eat more bananas). I'm in love with the LP and the epi LP Custom is $600 exactly! Coincidence? I don't think so.
But have him play both an lp and a strat and see which body type kind feels more comfortable in his hands. Once he figures that out you can narrow it down even more.

Supposedly the faded series of gibsons only lack gloss. The faded V, for example, can be had for the $600, as well as some of the other models. Not my thing, but the guys at GC claim they are the best Gibson deal. Like was said though, you gotta hand pick em. There are good ones and bad ones hanging right next to each other, I am sure. Just make sure it sounds great unplugged!8)

PRS SE One

It's a Les Paul Jr style guitar. Very simple, one pickup one volume.
I played one a few weeks ago and it played and sounded very nice.
I think an SE Soapbar II is still under $600. Same thing except double cut and with two pickups
I owned one of these and it was a very nice guitar. I regret selling it as I want another one now.
