The Big Muff is untamable. Used best with big Marshalls, transistor amps and low volumes. Still it never worked on mine either. Try a Dunlop Fuzz face its got a slightly better tone and is more controlable.

While I don't understand why, I know that this scenario happens with Oranges. I can use a distortion pedal with my Marshalls and it goes from a good sound to MUCH louder and with distortion when I kick in the pedal. Not so with the Oranges... it's almost like Orange amps are already close to the peak of the volume/gain boost you can get out of the amp as opposed to other amps. I've never had a pedal that would significantly increase the volume or distortion of the amp- it's only small increments... but the same pedal with a Marshall or any other amp and it's a huge difference.

like sleepbycity mentioned, the big muff is untamable. i borrowed one once and tried to get decent sounds from it (not through a orange though, but through a sovtek mig100h), and it was impossible. i think you relly have to study those devils before you get a good sound with one.

i tried using my rat proco rat through my orange and couldn´t get any good sounds. i´m quite happy though with the two channels (AD30). i don´t need any dist effects anymore.

by the way, can anyone give me some advice on what tremolo pedals are worth trying out?

Hey LesPaulKing.

You say your you muff pi sounds pile of poop on an Orange, but what I wonder is how you use the pedal. Either you're using it as pumping riffs a.k.a. Stoner rock or otherwise you're using it for that incredible sustain that this fine pedal easily can achive
.
If we talking stonerrock type of thing I can agree that this pedal doesn't sound rather good with an Orange, neither straight through nor through FX loop. Especially if you compare the sound from an Musicman head with a "deep" button. Do you have a "deep" button on your Musicman, I know I do?

On the other hand if you're looking for that wonderful sustainish solosound, the muff pi sound amazing.
I use my muff pi through the FX loop and that sustainsound is the best I've ever heard. Just be easy on the sustainknob. I use to set it somewhere between 9 o'clock and 12'o clock, but it all depends on what your playing.
But my advice is to start with the sustain in bottom and increase it gradually til you find the right sound for that particular song.

I'm speaking out of my a$$. Yours might differ.

I've tried my big muff with my orange. Sounded all-right, not horrible. I don't like it nearly as much as much as with my Marshalls or stiffer sounding amps. The orange is just too spongy to sound as good with a muff as a stiffer amp. However, I would tend to think a hard-clip over drive (tubescreamer, sd-1) would sound good with an orange, whereas I think they sound too strident with Marshall-type amps. I havent tried it yet, but plan on it.

Agree... Tubescreamers sound awesome with Oranges. I actually have been using a MJM BluesDevil recently (Tubescreamer knock-off) and it sounds amazing. Never tried any distortion pedals with the Orange, though.

I've heard a lot about that pedal. I was thinking about just going the sd-1 route (probably one of the best pedal deals out there), but the MJM has always been an object of curiousity for me.

Check it out if you can. They are very good sounding pedals.

They have been compared to the original Ibanez TS-808 (that sell for ridiculous prices) and have been noted to have a little more response in the lower-midrange to bass end of things. Overall my choice for stompin' in some drive if I have to.

Try a Fulltone tremolo...

I used a Maxon OD-808 (basically an Ibanez TS-808) and it was fine. The more transparent overdrives seem to complement Oranges a bit better than straight-out fuzz boxes etc. I've just got a Banzai Fireball II overdrive, which i'll let you guys have the lowdown on when i've put it through its paces. At the moment, i'm impressed. It's beating my Maxon - no easy feat...

Actually, shudder the thought, but Line 6 has put out a "tap tremolo" pedal that you can tap in the tempo. Something I've always wanted in a Trem pedal. Check it out http://www.line6.com. I use the Fulltone SupaTrem and love it. So good choice there Irish.

I've been using the Fulltone Fulldrive and the MJM BluesDevil for in the neighborhood of 2 to 3 years now. Both sound extremely good with my Oranges. I mean they sound really good...

The BluesDevil has a more pronounced midrange quality to it while the FullDrive is a little more transparent. It all depends on my mood as to which one I use. Right now I've been liking the midrange sweetness of the BluesDevil and so it is taking residence on the pedalboard.
