Dont rip it, cut it with a razor blade. It was funny, a while back the BBC ran a series of UK celebrities learning to play an instrument and one learned the guitar. He ended up teaching himself but as he knew plenty of the old school guys like Knopfler and Ray Davies from the Kinks, he did well. Ray Davies showed him what he used to do and that was slice the speaker evenly putting small cuts in it around the cone to get a fuzzy, distorted sound. The old blues guys like Elmore James used to do that back in the day to get a harder, more "evil" sounding.
