He says he's running a Marshall Gov'ner in front of it. I think you're hearing the pedal. I played a couple AC30s and you're right...without hitting the front with anything or running Dimarzio UberGanzenWelt Distortions that sound isn't gonna happen....which is fine with me, cause I'm a lower gain guy : ) But, I believe Brian May hit his front end with a Frankenclockradio him and his dad brewed up so, yeah, you can make an AC30 into something it wasn't designed to be if you need to!

Sounds like he's using a distortion pedal.
