2)Technical proficiency-I'm sure I'll get some crap for this one again(ahem BURD),but who cares ;) Alex Lifeson's solos at the beginning, and middle sections of 'La Villa Strangiato' as heard live on Exit Stage Left. Despite getting more 'artsy fartsy' keyboard oriented in the later '80's,he proved how he could really rip on this one! :)

<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">I was just watching this earlier this morning, Mr Lifeson himself ripping up "La Villa"........:D:D:D

I've been a die hard fan since the 70's and been trying to play it that well for decades and I'm still not really there, then again he did write it....:(

3)Technical proficiency - Tommy Emmanual improvising anything
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">Saw Tommy in Keswick, Lake District, England last Saturday in a little theatre. Thats just not fair thats not, how the hell did he get there? Suppose gigging 340 nights/year sorts it for you....:(

He also had some young Welsh lad, 18yrs old Gareath Pearson (Tommys Apprentice), sh!t, he was nearly as good..........

Personnally I enjoy having a life, I think I'd have to give up life to reach those technical heights.....extremely impressive nonetheless.....:D:D

1) Villanova Junction - Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock
2) I'm Going Home - Alvin Lee with Ten Years After at Woodstock; I know that it is pretty sloppy, but, and it's a big but, I've never heard that many notes crammed into a few minutes that actually meant something. Of course, after this, he got into speed playing for the sake of it. Shame.
3) The World is as Soft as Lace - Felt; the whole song is a nice solo by Maurice Deebank

4) For shear rockin' out solos that d'ont concern themselves with being played pristinely(is that actually a word?)- Page's work in 'Song Remains the Same' is pretty tough to top! 8)

<br />Best solo ever- Neil Young | Cinnamon Girl

Then of course there's Mountain's Theme For An Imaginary Western

If you've never heard that song, you need to....

Mah Man!!!

I would say Highway Star by Deep Purple, or Another Girl Another Planet by the Only Ones... but, after that...

We did Cinnamon Girl 2 times, people cry.

Good one Billy.

I agree with all the Gilmour comments - he is really great in all three areas and he really knows how to use his effects and tone to his advantage. My personal favorite Gilmour track is "Any Colour You Like"

some other great solos......

JIMI - The Wind Cries Mary (I really started to dig after I learned it)
The Beatles - Taxman (I know that Paul played it but I just really like something about it)
Stevie - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - Stevie's is probably the only cover I've heard that does this song justice
CCR - Heard It Through the Grapevine - one of the only really long songs I enjoy listening to all the way through every time
HI, my real name is Reo. I live in Dallas Texas and play an 82 American Strat through an AD30HTC through a Marshall 4X12

Thin Lizzy's "Cowboy Song" is entertaining

Allman Brother's "Statesboro Blues"

Brian May on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" May has get some fancy fret work me thinks

and for something different i'll mention George Harrison's work on "Something" very tasty indeed
