Can the Rockerverb do metal?
Moderator: bclaire
OK, which of you lucky people has tried/bought a Rockerverb? After much dissatisfaction hunting for an amp that suits my needs, I'm excited about this new release from Orange, but I gotta know... Can it do metal? Not NU, but old-school (Maiden, Megadeth, Queensryche, early Metallica maybe). I'm currently using a Gibson GA30RVS with a Tonebone Hot British, but the distortion still 'sounds' like it's coming from the pedal, not from the amp itself. I'd consider sacrificng the Gibson's stereo FX loop for a channel-switching amp if it can cut the mustard. Tried Engl, Marshall, Mesa, and they're all hopeless for classic rock and country/southern rock, IMO. Hoping the Rockerverb will quench my amp GAS once and for all. Please say what stuff you play and why the Rockerverb works (or doesn't work) for you.
I've also noticed that while there's nothing about this in the official blurb, some Orange dealers are advertising the 100W head as having a half-power switch. True or false?
Cheers.

The first channel is clean... let me say it again: CLEAN. Squeaky clean- painfully clean. It really need some effects to make it any kind of a dirty sounding channel. Channel Two is classic Orange with distortion, etc.
I think for the first channel to break up on its' own, you'd have to have the amp cranked unbelievably loud.
I think you'd be better off trying an AD140TC head myself.

Bummer. I presume it doesn't have a half-power switch after all, then? This contradicts Orange's claim that the clean channel offers some crunch. Why do you recommend the AD140? That's a ridiculous amount of volume. My 15W Gibson is loud enough for my requirements. I tried an AD30TC once, and as far as I could tell the distortion channel was only dirty enough for general rock, not metal.

No more so than a 100 watt Rockerverb. I know that the AD140TC is called 140 and the Rockerverb is called 100 but we're still talking about a quartet of EL34's in each as a power amp. Marshall Superleads are called 100 watt amps and the two that I had put out 137 and 145 respectively on the bench.
I recommended the AD140TC because it has two channels that can have adjustable gain- which you can't do with Rockerverb. But in thinking of "metal" I'm going to revise my replies and say that if you're looking for dropped D, chug chug chug metal, you're probably better off with a Marshall, Mesa, or Hughes & Kettner.
Matted out, I don't know as any Orange is going to give you that sound- I don't think the Rockerverb will do it- if so, it would only be channel two that you could use...

\Yeah, I know... which is why it's weird that it hasn't been out of its road case in about 5 months. I've been using my AD30TC combo for just about everything...
