For those who have used both of these speakers with Orange amps.What sonic differences did you find? thanks.

What I can say is that I have Weber California Alnicos. Not the same as the Blue Dogs, but Alnico style just the same. I have found that the V30 do like extreme distortion and break up much sooner than the Alnicos. But turned up the Alnicos blow away the v30's. The V30's sound aweswome on their own, until you A/b with the Alnicos.

Once you get the V30's up to a certain level(loudness and distortion) you will get no more out of them and they break up. The Alnicos have a smoother sound and clean up a lot nicer. I can go from screaming ZZtop to whinning Roy. Turned down the V30's still have a little fizz left.

Don't get me wrong, the V30's are great. I like the Alnicos better though.

the blue dogs have a strong midrange character, like the v30s....i have an alnico 30 watt blue dog. it's more 'delicate' than the v30 and a tad brighter

Which would you consider smoother? The V 30 can be a little too rw and midrange heavy IMO.

I don't like the G12h -30's at all with my amp.

i think the V30's are incredibley mid-heavy and harsh at that, IMO

all i can say is that the weber thames in my cab sound much smoother than the celestion G10s. it's a nice mix, these speakers seem to have different types of midrange response, and it works very well.

Those are two very different speakers to my ears. Probably about as different as you can get. The Blue Dog (I have experience with the alnico version, so if you're talking ceramic, my opinion might be of a bit less worth) is very warm and smooth and vintage in character. Very touch sensitive when clean and smooth in breakup. The v-30, even though it has vintage in it's mame is anything but. It is very brash, loud and upper-mid heavy.





(I don't like v-30's personally).

Thanks for the opinions. I think I am going to try one Alnico blue, and one ceramic blue. I am trying to shoot for a little more of the Vox type chime.I know it may not be possible with the Orange circuit and EL34 tubes.I think I am going to sell my cab with the G12H-30.

I had a Weber Blue Dog in my AD15/12 for a while to get more of a Vox feel. However, it sounded a bit loose and fizzy to me. So I tried running the AD15 through the Vox Blues in my AC30 with much better results. Maybe because there were two speakers in the AC30? I don't know but I question the Blue Dogs accuracy against the real Vox Blues. I also had a G12H Ann.
in it but eventually I went back to the V30. I think Orange got it right the first time but maybe the Blue Dog would sound better in a closed back cab.

When I called weber, I asked him about an alnico blue dog, and he said it would still be a bright speaker. He said to get the 12-f150. Something like that. I guess the website says something that the speaker is like a tweed type sound, warm, punchy, and good breakup.

I'm thinking about putting weber blue dogs in my AD30TC combo. Will this help bring about a better vintage tone, or not? I love that old British breakup.

Anybody know of a website where you can hear sound samples of different speakers? That's the problem with speakers, you can't really just try them out. Not even online as far as I know.
