hi
does anyone know how old an OR80, serial number 860, might be? I'm guessing that it must be pretty recent... I've met someone who's selling it, haven't seen the amp or any pix...
According to the seller it's early 1980s...

The seller is wrong! Orange stopped making amps in the late '70s, only starting up again properly in the '90s!
Sorry, but don't know how old it is.

It would be a 1974 or '75.

Cheers for your replies,

I've got a feeling that it might be an OTR80... Am I right in believing that these reissues have the misleading indication 'OR80' stamped on the back beside the serial number? It also has a full metal grill on the back, no wood, and the whole thing looks pretty new. Unless it really is a vintage OR80 in immaculate condition, I'm guessing it's a mid 1990s OTR80...
I don't have enough experience to tell the diffreence... The seller is convinced it's not a reissue, and I think he's genuine, but I reckon he was told it was vintage when he bought it.
Are there any obvious details that help you tell the difference between the old and new versions?
Thanks again...

Sounds like a re-issue. Having a full metal back plate says it's a newer amp.
What does the face plate look like, does it say the model on the front?
What kind of power plug does it have, is it a fixed plug or removable?
What does the Orange logo look like, is the left leg of the "A" in Orange skinny or fat?

It doesen't have the name of the model printed on the front like some reissues; however the power cable is detachable...

I would say it's a re-issue OR80, mid '90's or newer.

D'oh!

I was really hoping it was an original, but it seemed to good to be true; dunno if i'll buy it now, but I need an amp real quick, and Orange isn't easy to come buy where I live...

With the seller being not the original owner, and his knowledge of the amp unclear, warning signs start to appear.
Who knows what has been done with the amp, or what it will do, especially after you buy it.

I agree,

but i can't see the guy selling it trying to rip me off; I've tried the amp, it seemed fine (which doesn't prove that something might go wrong). Actually there was slight crackle for a minute or so as it warmed up, but i thought that was quite common.

The whole amp is really in immaculate condition, + i had a look inside, everything looks good, it has new tubes.
The seller has been running it at 30W instead of 80, by removing two tubes.

Anything you suggest i should look for or ask about?
thanks again

if he removed 2 tubes in an or80 then it would be running at 0 watts.
1971 OR120 (Plexi Panel, Big Pix Only)
1994 Fender Jaguar (Seymour Duncan Humbuckers, Gibson Nashville Bridge)
2002 PPC412 (British V30s)

Bang on EC! You're dead right, 2 minus 2 = none at all. Thanks for the first good laugh of the day!

Strikes me that the seller really doesn't know what he's on about. Buying s/h is always a bit of a gamble, though if the amp itself stands up to a good thrashing it may be worth it (if the price is good enough that is).
A newer amp (sounds likely) at least shouldn't have the problem of ageing capacitors etc. causing problems yet, and even the reissues are decently built amps. If you really want an older Orange it'll probably cost more, especially with a proper service to think about.
Whatever, don't pay over the odds for this one Jaike! Your choice.

Good Luck!
