Hello,

I come from Holland, so trying out amps is hard...There for I want to ask you guys if you can give me some advice!

I like a clean vintage warm tone, but with clean I mean CLEAN not overdriven (or something), I also like a powerfull amp (something like a AD50??)
I usually play funk and punk. I'm inspired by John Frusciante (guitarist Red Hot Chili Peppers)
So is Orange a good brand for me or not??

if you want CLEAN, then go with a hiwatt. orange is going to have some breakup even at low levels.

If you want to sound like john, here's what he was using as a stage-rig in 2001..

Than you do the math.. (i'd go fender bassman) *shame on me*

No, I don't think Orange is the amp for you. They're not very clean sounding amps. Though the cleans are wonderfuly to my ears, it's definitely a broken up clean, no prostine by any means.

To me, it almost sounds like you're describing a solid state amp. Tube amps aren't clean monsters, there's almost no tube amp that's totally clean at band volumes. But that's exactly why they sound so good.

I'm with ecto coolest. If you want a clean TUBE amp, look for a Hiwatt, Ampeg V-4, Fender Twin...Bandmaster...Silverfaced bassman. If you want pristine clean...look into something solidstate like a Roland Jazz chorus. They're nice sounding amps.

I had a 68 Fender Bassman that was one sweet amp- it broke up and distorted nicely- I wouldn't call it a choice for clean headroom. It was more like a JTM-45 kind of sound, I'd say.

Okay!

But I now own a JTM-45, but I think it doesnt have enough power, if I want to play with it on band volume it's almost TOTAL DISTORTION so that's a pitty because on low volume it sound amazing...I'm doubting between a Marshall 1959SLP a Fender Twin Reverb and a Orange RETRO50 or AD50...More advice please..!!
Again, I usually play funk and rock, and stuff like John Frusciante!
(Already thanks for all the persons who replied!!)

how about the marshall superbass? bassy tone alright, but loud as hell and sounds great, i still believe that the filverface bassman is a really good choice, also the fender performer (all valve preamp but solidstate poweramp) is a good choice.. or maybe the showman john used..

Fender Performer 1000 ...

Have one right here next to me in my bedroom ... To play (... try to)guitar on it ... The thing was of my girlfriend for some years, I stole it ... But I would not steal it again. We have during the years several problems with this combo-amp. Now it's the input, it has been 'cracking noise', a 'no more channel switching' ...

No no ... not a good amp. Maybe it's the store I bought it in, they "tried" to fix it, but don't make me start over the "stores" pile of poop. I HATE musicstores for 90%, there are just a few who are really cool. And sinds it's not a valve-amp, I can't bring it to my "real" tech dude :) (altough, maybe I should do that later .. good idea)

Fender Silverface bassman, ... I sure want one of these, with the matching cabinet with the "angled" speakers ... THEY ROCK !

Wow- I have two JTM-45's and it's the same deal. In a trio, they're fine but with a second guitar player, they just weren't loud enough (using only one). YET- the AD30TC combo IS loud enough. Weird...

Okay, hmmmm I like the Marshall Superbass, but are they still available? And how much do they cost? And the Fender Showman is it still in the market? And how much does that one cost?

yes, early 70's marshall superbass (100Watts) are pretty easy to find, but not in original condition.. Over here they cost about $600.

well i've only seen the showman as a head.. with cab.

Hey peter, i know, I had one, it rocked alright, but for bass the watts weren't enough.. so i sold it.. i had to play att 10 on both master and volume.. and got totally distorted raveonettes kind of sound.

I once almost bought a cabinet like that (with the 4 12" angled speakers), and I kept my eye on some bassmans too on ebay. The 100W-versions are pretty easy to find and not that much €€€, but like you said, maybe not enough power.

I was really lookin' for a 140 model, but ... $$$€€€$$$ ...
Not that cheap.

But I don't give up. One day ... one day a cheap one passes by and then its MINE (like the Orange 8x10 ... patience, a lot of patience and loads of good luck) ...
