Something i feel people generally overlook whent it comes to their sound is their strings and picks. In my opinion deciding what strings and picks you use and also how you use your pick is a very important part of what makes up a persons overall sound. I believe finding the right gauge, brand, type etc of string and by perfecting how you use your pick(s) and what pick you use use is very important in completing how you sound. So im asking everyone;
1) What srings do you use and why? ,what sort of sound do they give you etc
2)What pick(s) do you use and again, why?
3)Also what straps, stands, cables and other such equipment do you use?

Finally im interested in learing more about bridge height, action, inotation and other such bits and bobs about your guitar and how they affect your over all sound, so any decent links, books etc? Which provdie info.

STRINGS: Ernie Ball Super Slinkys- never had a bum set- been using them since 1969

PICKS: Fender 358 heavy's in abalone. They quit making them but I fortunately had bought 2 gross. I hate the white and shell ones... The little 358's work really well for hybrid picking so that's why I use them.

STRAPS:

I make my own... buy leather cowhide, stain it, add conchos, and custom cut the length just right.

I decided to post for fun.

I use .11 gauge, DR blues strings. I love how they feel, they have a really sleek feel and have never broken on me. Slinkys always fall apart on me!

As for picking equiptment: I use the yellow dunlops and occassionaly the green dunlops. Also my favorite companion in my bag of tricks is my E-bow which provides me with such a unique tone and a whole new way of playing guitar. Oh how I love my jazzmaster...

1. Elixir .11 - Long lasting tone, don't have to change 'em as much.
2. Tortex .60(Orange) picks. Long lasting picks, good grip. I always tear thru other ones, i.e., fender picks.
3. Levy straps, reason? I'm not sure.

i know this is about guitar.. but i'll throw in my bass-specs..

strings: Fender original roundwounds 0.45-1.05(Medium), fits perfect with my jazz-bass and gives me a lot mor growl than other strings that i've tried and they're also a lot less expensive..

picks: D'andrea pro-grips 88mm or clayton 80mm, the claytons are more comfortable playing with while playing rock-song.. BUT the d'andrea's give me more punch for some odd reason..

i use pro-co rat cables and d'addario-straps...(the adjustable basic ones)

if anyone wanted to know..

Hi Macahan, finally I hear someone who loves the Fender strings also. I also used to play them, but I skipped them some time ago. They are the BEST strings on jazz-bass IMHO. But, ... They snap to fast. I had to put other strings like 5-8 times a year because of the E-strings that broke all the time. Maybe it's my heavy picking, or just the Fender strings that are not that good in quality. It was just not possible to keep that up ...

Then I used ROTASOUND strings (the ones Jaco Pastorius used), at .105. But because I need my strings really short to my neck, the 105's were to loose. And also the "sound" of the Rotasounds was not that good IMHO. To "bassy". Okay for Jaco-sound-alikes maybe, but not for guys like me who NEED the "high-rumble-sound" of the jazz-bass. And now I play d'Addario's, at .110 . But I don't like them either. I don't know what to do, isn't there a .107 ? :)

Acually I'm still in the need of "really good" and favorite jazzbass basstrings. Like the original Fenders, but then more quality and a longer lifetime. But you can't try bass-strings like you can try picks ... A set costs like 30-40 euro's/dollars so ... You can't just buy 5 sets to test the best.

For bass-picks I use the ORANGE Dunlops - .60mm

For guitar I use Dean Markley 9-46 strings, and the light-gray Jim Dunlop .60 pickups. Altough they are also .60, they are much lighter then the Orange Dunlop's.

I use Rotosound 10s - I like the sound and they seem more able to endure my sometimes heavy picking style.

I'm not too fussed about which brand of picks I use but they tend to be heavy but with some give... if a pick is too light I can't really achieve the same single note expression.

The action on my Lucille is relatively high compared to other well set up guitars... I also refused to have the frets ground down as I like the superior note bending and tonal expression I get from fatter frets.

When it comes to how my guitar is set up, I'm more concerned with the tonal output than ease of playing - and if I'm struggling to play a particular lick or phrase then I'll practice until I've got it down... the end result is better...

are there 107's?? i don't think so.. never seen that anywhere.. but then i haven't actually checked around..

seriosely.. i think the reason why your strings pop are because of some damage to the bridge.. it happened to me on an old yamahabass.. i popped my a and e strings all the time.. since i got the jazzbas i haven't popped more than 2 strings since 1997..

the fender strings actually performs great for me..

check the bridge for small dents of something it's probably the problem.

I will check, but IMHO it's not the bridge, it's string-tru-body and the strings are laying on a nice round shoe ... It does not happen with other strings, only with the Fenders. And not only with the E-string like I said in previous post, but most of the time with the E-string ... It's a 2000' see-trough-white Jazzbass USA.

And it was a joke about the 107's haha :)
