You could buy a Squier and get a conversion neck (maybe). I think it would fit the neck pocket, although I think there can be problems with imports not having standardized neck pockets, hardware, etc. I'm pretty sure the Bass VI neck will fit into a standard Jag/Jazzmaster neck pocket but don't quote me on that. But, the necks cost so much that you'd still be way up there in price and be playing a Squier, which isn't bad, but a $700 or so Squier might not be such a worthing investment considering the pickups and hardware may not be top shelf. I'm thinking the most fool proof way is to make sure to buy bodies and necks that are built to Fender spec like Mighty Mite, Allparts, Warmoth, USACG, etc., plus that way you can choose color, neck specks, tinting, etc. Probably run somewhere around $800 to build one me thinks. I want Nitro, gloss neck with tinting, etc. If I don't like it, I'll sell the neck and turn it into a Jazzmaster I guess.

No wonder this Cure song sounds so cool (High). I always wondered how they get it to sound like this... Two Fender Bass VIs playing the lead lines, plus bass guitar.

This is my second favorite Cure song.

^That sounds great for live!

Saw these guys live, Cop Shoot Cop, back in the 90s.

They had 2 bass guitars one of them a baritone IIRC... certainly helped give them a distinctive sound.

Actually, just visited Warmoth and am now really tempted to grab a Bass VI in Lake Placid Blue, white scratch plate and birdseye maple neck.

All for under $700.

Got a friend who did a Warmoth 12-string and now he'll barely play anything else.

I've got a Fender Sub-Sonic tuned in open A minor. Sounds massive through the Thunderverb. I've also used it in more of a folk rock setting as an attempt to cover the bassline most of the time but still have lead options. Sounded ok, but the lead sounded flabby and the bass was minimal. It's probably better as an additional instrument. But it was different, and kind of worked.

You'll only step on the bass player if he lets you, most likely, but I'd try to avoid playing real low when one or both of you are doing active runs and such, because it'll sound muddy, unless you're doing the exact same thing or something arranged to complement it. Having the two instruments come together at certain points would probably sound really cool though.

Also, baritone should be a good instrument for blending clean and distorted tones together.

That sounds pretty awesome. If not that combination, I'd probably go for Sonic Blue with a white/black/white guard and a Rosewood fingerboard.

Ive got a Danelectro Longhorn baritone in black which I play for about half the songs in one of the bands I am in. The jangleyness of the lipstick pickups counters the potential muddyness of the Orange+Baritone combination. Sounds heavy, but clear. Bass through Ampeg plus baritone through Orange plus Tele through M..shal makes for a huge and heavy basic band sound. Danelectros are super cheap for what they are too, and I have never found one that isnt a pleasure to play.

Robert Smith has a custom VI from Schecter.

I haven't played this one but I have the Hellcat VI, and Ultra VI and they both nail the Cure sound for way cheaper than the Fender reissues.
