Can someone explain the differences....

Post by Companyman » Sun Jul 21, 2013 3:17 pm

.....Between the OR-15 and the JimRoot Terror other than the obvious cosmetic differences? Thanks!

The circuit itself is voiced differently. The #4 terror is the same circuit (preamp) as the Rockerverb. The OR15 I'm not really sure, but probably similar to the OR50 and 100.

Thanks for the response! When you say voicing, do you mean eq or different gain structure, like does the OR-15 not have as many gain stages? Or is the gain fuzzier...?

The EQ is most likely different. They both have 4 gain stages, but they might be set up differently. Voltages, potentiometer values etc.. I personally haven't played both so I don't know the exact differences in sound, but they share the same circuit board.

I have a Root Terror and like it, but can't help but think that I might like the more vintage tone of the OR-15.....I know I like the aesthetics of the OR-15 better with the amp shell and all....

I have not tried the #4, so I only know that it's supposed to be a "Tiny Rockerverb". The OR15 does not sound as 'vintage' as it looks based on my limited experience with it. You should play a Tiny Terror and see if it does what you want or if it's too 'vintage'. The OR15 seems to be somewhere between the TT and the #4 in terms of voicing. It has sh*tloads of gain on tap though, so it runs out of 'vintage' territory pretty early on the dial.

Okay, thanks for that...not sure if the aesthetics are enough to make me switch to the OR-15.

Pretty accurate. I didn't find the OR15 particularly vintagy, I found it to sound very much like my RV50 dirty channel..... Ymmv

they're both made on the same pcb - which would suggest to me that the differences lie in component values?

if the #4 has the same preamp as the RV, that would suggest the OR-15 is simply a tweaked RV, right?

Personally I like the OR15 sound better than the rockerverb. I had an or15 and really liked it but it just didn't have that low end that I wanted so I sold it and got a Rockerveb 50. Now I'm selling the rockerverb it is similar to the or15 but personally I don't like it as well

I have the #4 and recently sold my Dark Terror to fund my purchase of the OR15. The OR15 sounds nothing like the #4, they have their own voicing. I would say that the OR15 sounds closer to the DKT, but with a tad bit less gain and an added EQ.
The OR15 is a great amp, and I'm glad I decided to get it. The OR15 is voiced more vintage, but a high gain vintage. Trust me, the OR15 is a fire breathing dragon that will do old school metal, but lacks the bottom end for modern metal. I leave all that for my #4.

So what I gather is that the Root has a better bass response than the OR-15?

Yes , the #4 has a better bass response. But the OR with is vintage voicing, would probably cut thru the mix a little better.
