Baked Maple...

Post by leopoldbloom » Wed May 09, 2012 10:48 am

Is it just me thinking: Baked maple - what a waste of fine work on a Les Paul.

i played some baked maples a while ago. sounded okay, but the looks is just terrible IMO. It's a desperate measure from the company, i wouldn't expect it to be a fine work. but i guess lots of folks are already buying and being happy with it, so...

From a style point of view it works a lot better on some body colours than other.

The material itself is absolutely fine and nice to play, but Ive seen fretboard colours varying a lot - from blond to rosewood like.

The lighter shade of baked maple can work very well with black or white guitars, but seem to look out of place on most other guitars, especially if red or burst of some sort.

yeah it's mainly a looks issue. apparently they feel/sound a lot like ebony. if you can just get a dark enough board, and then lemon oil it, you're good to go.

I don't understand the whole rosewood issue. There are other species of rosewood that don't come from the Madagascar forest.

yeah, like india...oh wait. their stocks of indian rosewood were raided in a seperate, previous incident.

it's the pattern of the government stepping in and taking their stocks that's got them resorting to woods like baked maple. like the old saying goes, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, and there isn't going to be a third time...

Hopefully everyone who works at the Gibson factory has a CWP.

Maybe there aren't any with the price they would get it from Madagascar. This whole "new" Gibson administration it's pretty weird, seems to me that sometimes their business is going through a wrong direction. like that they're focusing on a larger consumer range than the older loyal ones... maybe it's for the best of the company financial health, but for me that's just sad.
