ronnie montrose [edit - rip]

Post by sidvicious » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:14 pm

for those of us old enough, or those in the know;

can you believe on his solo album he used a fender bandmaster with three 10 inch speakers?

amazing. that album is responsible for much of all that happened in music later, including now.

a fender bandmaster and three ten inch speakers. simply amazing.

edit - ronnie died saturday. we lost a legend - a guy that truly shaped the future of rock and roll with the release of his solo album.

So by solo album, are you referring to "Montrose"? Who can't love that album. Yeah I always thought it was a marshall but nope....

Legend has it he bought that amp at a garage sale?

That amp in action....

I'm guessing he used some kind of dirt pedal then?

I dunno Paul. Maybe. I think if you dimed that puppy it's conceivable you could get that sort of grind (the live performance I linked to) with a lester straight in? Just a guess as I've not played one. But a dimed deluxe or bassman could go there I believe.

Excellent detective work!

I think Bandmasters were around 40 watts, so you could certainly crank them up in a full (loud) band setting. The 50-watt Bassman gets fairly dirty when fully cranked, so it's feasible that he didn't use a pedal with the BM.

Also, I noticed that Sammy Hagar was one ugly lady.

in an interview he said he used a fuzz on bad motor scooter, but probably for the slide part on the studio cut. otherwise he said he didn't use any pedals. he dialed in the grind on the bandmaster for his solo album. he said that he had to have his 3x10 cab re-coned several times while recording.

i never knew that and was fascinated when i heard that. like many, i wore the groves out on that album and continue to do so today. when that came out, we all went "uh, oh!" "what's this!!"

a fender bandmaster. who woulda thought.

Those three speaker Bandmasters were pretty cool. I have no idea what they go for, but I'll bet it's a lot!

I just read that it was the amp of choice for Pete Townshend from Who's Next on - and it IS the sound of Who's Next!

and while on the tweed bandmaster topic, it is also Joe Perry's live "secret weapon".

That blew me away when I found that out about a year ago. Well it half blew me away. The other half was that his main recording guitar was a Gretsch 6120.

Very sad about Ronnie... always wanted to see him live. Too late for it now. Same with Leslie West - better go see him ASAP
