Re: Phase inverter

Anyone has experience with diff pre amp tubes in the phase inverter Actually since your signal always passed through the PI (from all preamp channels in multi channel amps, unless they have a separate PI per channel like the AD30), it is one of the stages where valve swaps can have the most effect ...

Re: Terror Bass 1000 problem

THE TB doesn't have power amp valves, it has a solid state output section. The valves are preamp, and I don't think those failing would cause power down like that. (And if they fail they tend to stay failed!) Try contacting Orange themselves (or their dealer) for advice if still in warranty. (If you...

Re: Terror Bass designation?

Actually if you are talking about the batch which went out with defective output transistors a number of years back, Orange will have probably fixed most of those under warranty. Shouldn't be a big problem, especially if you actually give the amp a proper test run before buying. https://forum.orange...

Re: Bolt on neck tip

Quarter turn on those big thread bolts is WAY more than thousands of an inch. Sure it'll not move much because you are just releasing a bit of compression at the start. But I'm not sure that is really a good thing. IMO you almost can't overtighten the neck bolts, tight = good. But it seems not every...

Re: AD 50, after bias and attenuator

This is a noob question, but what causes an amp to "drift" out of its optimal point of bias? Power valve wear. The current they'll output for a given bias will likely change a bit with use. It isn't the amp drifting, it is the valves. Biasing isn't an exact science. There is generally a reasonable ...

Re: Bolt on neck tip

What??? Trying to follow your logic here. How can loosening the bolts increase wood to wood contact? And string tension is going to pull the neck out of the pocket, not into it... Sounds like a very bad idea to me. What may be happening is that the neck angle has changed slightly. If you fee...

Nice grab AryaS. Got mine new, also an early Japanese one. First pedal I ever bought, not exactly mint any more, but does sound great!

Re: Interesting tube failure

Yep, I'd say that both those valves are dead! Jondog's is a bit unusual, but maybe the bottle was a bit weak / flawed and just went through one too many heat cycle. Billy's looks as if it was melted by running far too hot. I'd guess the one valve was off spec and ran way hotter than the others...

Re: External cabinet options with a Rocker 30?

I wasn't sure whether to post this under Technical or community discussion, but anyhow.... I have a Rocker 30 that I am absolutely in LOVE with, and I want to add an external cabinet. Basically the only options I am considering are the PPC212, the PPC212OB, and the PPC412. New, the PPC212OB is much...

Re: NAD: Beaten up AD200B - Updated with Pics

I have only one thing to say... "Holy pile of poop this sounds huge!". I feel bad for my OB1-300 now as I believe it is going to get relegated to 'back-up amp'. Well I guess even a nice 300W solid state amp is always going to have to take a bow to a nice 200W valve job. Possibly the OB1-500 might h...

Re: dark terror vs dual dark 50

My first tube amp was a Classic 100 head! It’s not a bad amp, but the 100W rating is a little ambitious, IMO. To me, it never did have the power, headroom, or thump of an EL34 amp. Though, you’re right, it definitely sounded stout! You’re right that the design of the amp has the most influence in t...

...I knew Andy would say Hiwatt!!! didn't expect 5810 to also say it. ...Thanks for the videos. That Hiwatt does sound good. I never doubted the tone they have, as I have heard some great stuff out of them. Well, of course I'd say Hiwatt. I've been a fan since first trying one in the early '80s, an...
