I'm currently playing my 70s OR120 overdrive through a Marshall 1960B cabinet with Celestion 75 watt speakers (GT-75 something or others) ... man, do those speakers stink. I realized this after buying a '66 Fender Champ with an absolutely amazing Jensen alnico in it. Now I want to build an open back...

Matamp, Orange amps, Green amps... they're all connected somehow, right? I'm wondering how it all fits together. Anyone?

I get all four speakers either way. To split the cab, it goes to 16 ohms. I didn't do too well in physics, but I thought maybe the lower the ohms, the less the resistance, which might make the amp run cooler, change the tone or maybe even make it a little louder (like I need that).

From what I've learned, it's really a crap-shoot to date an Orange. Supposedly, no "Overdrive" amps were made before 1976, but my amp's serial number puts it in the 1974-75 range, AND it has an attached power cord. Maybe it was a prototype? Who knows. I don't really care anymore. I just know that I'...

I run my vintage Orange 120 Overdrive through a Marshall stereo 4x12, 300 watt cabinet. With one amp into the cabinet, I have the option of 4 or 8 ohms. I'm wondering if there's an advantage to using one or the other since I can switch ohms on the amp.

To heck with effects ... just plug the guitar in and let it rip.

There's nothing wrong with a combo. I play a 70s OR120 overdrive through a 4x12 (Marshall) cab and a Vox AC-15 combo. There are instances where you need a smaller amp to play in the mix. So my advice is to get the combo and keep it until you get the money to buy that OR120 overdrive and 4x12.

If it's relevant, I just got rid of my 80s JCM 800 in favor of my 70s OR120 overdrive. The Orange overdrive is just more saturated with harmonics and the bottom end is just plain amazing. I run my gain and volume at 6 and put a Tube Screamer on the front end (not that it really needs it, I just like...

Geertjacobs,

OK, here's something that might be a twist. I have an OR120 Overdrive, pictures and text, large and small knobs with an attatched power cord, serial number 13193. Supposedly, the overdrives were made after 1976, but the cord would indicate a pre-1975 model.

Saw SNL a couple weeks ago and Jimmy Eat World was playing. It was nice to see one of their guitarists jammin' with an old Orange 120 overdrive. A friend of mine used to be in a band that shared a practice space with Jimmy, and he said it was really strange to see that same amp in a much different v...

twang ... I don't have the amp in front of me, so I don't know the serial number, but I can tell you that the power cord does not detach and the back panel (nicely barbequed on the inside) has a metal grille. Thanks for your help.

Also, ever heard of people putting KT-88s in an Orange?

twang ... I could be wrong about the date. The guy I bought it from told me that it was either a '74 or a '75, but that he wasn't exactly sure. My tech is going to look it over this week. He knows everything, so he'll be able to tell me for sure.

Thanks to all for the info. I run my amp (the overdrive version) into a Marshall JCM 900 1960 300 watt straight cabinet (I like to hear the tubes overdrive instead of the speakers break up, and it does the trick). The harmonic overtones are amazing.

I recently bought a '74 or '75 Orange OR120. So far, it's all honeymoon ... I love this amp (it kicks the crap out of my Marshall JCM 800). Anyway, I've got some questions. On the far left, there is a large knob that switches between several settings. While I notice obvious differences in the sound ...
