Re: Same amp but switching from 6L6s to EL34s
You should also consider that different makes of the same valve spec can sound quite different and that may be more noticable than a swap to EL34. The biggest sound changer would be the cone driver but I agree with others it will get softer and more middy when the power amp section is up there cooki...

Re: Best mic for violin live situation
The problem is basic physics. Double the distance = half the volume. That works both in and out of the sound system. So a 421 in a boom stand placed so a thrashing bow won't hit it is going to get a nice tone but no real gain before feedback. What you might use is a tie clip condenser attached to th...

Love Arias from those days, if the PUs seem a little hot just wind them away from the strings to get the sweet spot.
Great Score there Wendigo.

Re: GASer seeks pedalboard upheaval
One of the reasons things like the MXR phase 90 and the OCD are classics is because they are that. Press the switch and you have a musical sound. Trying to get the all singing all dancing latest thing can be frustrating and expensive, I long ago came to the conclusion that a few classic pedals used ...

Re: Need advice...
If you have agreed to do something for money, do the deed and deliver the job. However multi format recording does not sound like part of the agreement. Give her the mix she has paid for and renegotiate to re-engineer or re-record in a different format at a new price. It's called the 'Music Business...

Re: One Condensor Mic
Woodsie, with live sound reinforcement there are compromises with position/placement on mics especially on small loud stages. However the position of the mic in respect of the cone makes far more difference than the brand of the mic and all the knob twiddling on the desk. Just shoving a mic against ...

Re: One Condensor Mic
SM57 imparts too much character for most vocals although in some situations that can be desirable on a specific recording. The AKG C1000s is the exception that proves the rule, it's a little grainy and the top end is harsh, any other AKG in preference, the C3000 is nice and versatile. The AT mics ar...

Re: Anyone run one of those new Multi fx boards?
Multi-effects units have all the options BUT all of them are just average (generalisation), so whilst they work they don't have the last 5% that stands a booteek pedal aside from an also works pedal. (I'm not saying that is a bad thing). Lots of Pro and touring guitarists will use a board of BOSS pe...

Re: GAS for 1956 ES125
When your heart and your head tell you it's the right guitar, it's the right guitar. Colour, brand, condition (within reason) no longer matter because you will make better music with this guitar. Sell a kidney/small child and become one with the guitar that has chosen you. I'm not helping the GAS am...

Re: How stupid is this plan?
I went to see a band that I heard about on another forum and met the guitar player. 3 weeks later he contacted me through that forum to see if I would cover 2nd guitar duties as a dep. I said yes because they played classic rock and pop and were fun guys. emailed set lists and keys etc. As the date ...

Re: Been offered a 1977 Greco Les Paul Custom
Greco and Burny are among the best 'lawsuit' les pauls, they command good money and sell well, I suggest you would have little problem recouping your money from one. The latest Blazing Fire sold on ebay for about 70% of the going rate for a good greco LP.
Does that help?

Re: Using git vol as mv
This was pretty much the old school method of dynamic control. In the days before master volumes you set the amp up loud and then used the guitars volume together with your picking/playing style to take you in or out of the overdrive. Used well it becomes very dynamic and adds a further level of art...

Re: How do you carry your Orange head
If you can always carry it yourself and gently place it in your own car, then a dust cover is just about good enough. If other people are involved and vans in particular, then a flight case is essential. You will retain more value in the amp and if you buy a used case the chances are you'll get your...

Re: helping live sound in a bad room?
You can do little to stop reverberant sound, but the best trick is to control (minimise) the overall volume. Go for direct radiated sound, by that I mean get the guitar amps off the ground near your and the audiences ears. Raise the PA speakers and tip them to the centre so they focus into the crown...
