I have thought the sounds on Zep I & II sounded suspiciously like an Orange Matamp head through 50 watt Fane speakers. I can nail those tones with one in any case.
Page was always very vague if not deceptive about how he got his sounds (understandibaly).
sorry bout my spellin

I've been using a Hartke 1x15 and 4x10 with an Orange PA 120 recently for small clubs. It's been perfect.

You might try this: make sure you go into the "lo" input on your orange which can handle a hotter signal. Turn the Volume down on the big muff as not to overdrive the input. Now turn up the amp and you should be OK. This works with any distortion box and an Orange. I never met a box my Orange didn't...

I have been told 75 watts by the folks at eminence. I would say at least 50 watts per driver.

That one had Celestion 30 watt greenbacks in it.
They also came with 25 watt greenbacks as well as 50 watt Fanes.

Well my curiosity compelled me to put a DOD 250 overdrive in front of the Orange Matamp OR200 Slave amp this afternoon. You would be amazed at the sound it produced. Plenty of gain. No tone knob on the 250 but didn't need. The sound is clear well defined and loud. It sounded best with the gain knob ...

I agree. It's not a likely story. However I have to wonder if it is based on someones recolection of Hendrix trying this setup at some point, which is highly likely. I must get a Big Muff and try it sometime. I think the OR 200 power amp with a fuzz / distortion / overdrive as the preamp could be in...

You won't get much sound from a slave if you plug the guitar straight into it. You must have some sort of preamp that boosts the input signal to the slave amp. In other words an Orange slave is an Orange OR 120 with no preamp section. I have been told that Jimmy Hendrix used a big muff straight into...

I would buy an AD30 to start with. It's a great sounding amp and not to big. Plenty of volume and gain though. Youcan always sell it if you don't continue to play.

I missed it by a couple of bucks too billy. I suspect it needed a driver replaced so I wasn't going very high either.

Looks like 1970 to me. 50 watt version of the Orange Matamp.
The caps probably date from '67 to '69 if it's anything like my OR100.
There are two stage settings. One is normal the other has a high end boost. The studio settings are the same but half the power and not as much overdrive when cranked.

Test the speaker input with an ohm meter and find out what the impedence is before you plug the amp into it.

The tapes I have seen feature Orange Matamp OR200 heads (4xKT88 power tubes) and 4x12 cabs which are most likely loaded with 50 watt Fane drivers. It's not the same as a GT100 circuit.
