OR50H vs Rockerverb 50mkii Head
Hey guys, I was just wondering what the tonal differences are between these two amps. I love orange amps for their low mid beef and their stoner rock dirt sound, but have never owned one. Im trying to decide which is best for me. Pros and Cons?
Re: OR50H vs Rockerverb 50mkii Head
I don't have an OR50 but an OR100... No longer have a MKII but I got MKIII.
First question I would ask is; do you like more modern breakup in the gain department?
MKIII has a more user friendly reverb (though I liked the less traditional reverb of the MKII) no reverb on the ORs. The III has also an attenuator which is really great for different applications.
Not sure on the OR50 vs 100... But the 100 can go down to 30w and has a gain boost function.
Overall both are awesome amps. I tend to use hotter guitars (pickups) with the OR a little more classic orange sounding due to the RVs more modern gain response. I plan to do a duel between both amps but haven't had the time. Be sure to let you know though, might be able to knock it out in the next couple days.

Tonally quite different and a lot more gain on the RV mkii, think more modern rock.
And the RV really doesn't like overdrive pedals on either channel.

Sounds to me the OR is what you need.

With the OR100 having a switchable wattage setting, 100/70/50/30w, what's this amp like at lower volumes for home use?
Cheers.
Cheers.
Re: OR50H vs Rockerverb 50mkii Head
Even in the 30W mode this amp's loud as heck. I always play mine using hearing protection. That said it sounds pretty good at lower volume levels as well though it's ment to be played loud. It is a big amp for the big stages really. But the feeling turning the volume up above 1-2 o'clock and the gain at the same setting, playing open A riffs on a Les Paul through two 412s is Unbelievable. You need to experience it.BeyondTheSunn wrote:With the OR100 having a switchable wattage setting, 100/70/50/30w, what's this amp like at lower volumes for home use?

Re: OR50H vs Rockerverb 50mkii Head
I yearn to play an OR100 through a couple of PPC412HP-8 some day, in 100w mode of course. Now that'll be quite something, lol. Saying that, my CR120C can be overkill for home use with either Channel Volume on 10 and the Master Volume between 2 and 3. Not O 'Clock, I mean between 2 and 3 to 10. It's mega loud... 1 is pretty people next door friendly. Yet I still want to plug it into a PPC412... When you have two 60w 12"s, you just want four more.Bensnake wrote: Even in the 30W mode this amp's loud as heck. I always play mine using hearing protection. Actually I use it at all settings when I am home And fine tune for playing out and will switch the settings as needed I like the 70w setting. The amp sounds great at any volume really, very organic and responsiveBeyondTheSunn wrote:With the OR100 having a switchable wattage setting, 100/70/50/30w, what's this amp like at lower volumes for home use?

I have owned both and still have the or50, the or50 is a little fuzzier at certain settings but it also tends to have more clarity and it takes pedals great and sounds pretty good at low volumes, it has a very good MVBeyondTheSunn wrote:I yearn to play an OR100 through a couple of PPC412HP-8 some day, in 100w mode of course. Re: OR50H vs Rockerverb 50mkii Head
Thanks all for your replies so far!
Basically i want to be able to crank the pre amp for the classic orange tube gain.
But it needs to be useable with pedals such a big muff so i can get different tones as well.
Im thinking the rockerverb would work well because i could get the natural tube saturation from the dirty chanel, and use my fuzz pedals with the clean chanel.
But i suspect the or50 is closer to the classic orange sound.
Thoughts?

Re: OR50H vs Rockerverb 50mkii Head
Just to save the trouble of finding out the hard way, the two PPC412HP-8 cabs together would equal a 4-ohm load, which the OR100 is not designed to accommodate. The Thunderverb 200 can be connected to two of those cabs when it is in 200-watt mode, but other Orange guitar amps are not intended to work with two of those cabs simultaneously.BeyondTheSunn wrote:I yearn to play an OR100 through a couple of PPC412HP-8 some day, in 100w mode of course...

Re: OR50H vs Rockerverb 50mkii Head
The OR50 behaves (and sounds) very much like an old single-channel, non-Master Volume amp from the 1970's when you crank the Master Volume knob (or footswitch it out of the circuit). It can sound somewhat clean and can take pedals pretty well for an Orange. Don't mistake it for a two-channel amp though unless you want to be disappointed by the useless Footswitch-Defeatable Master Volume function. It is a simple, straightforward Classic Rock amp with extra fuzz on tap if you want it.chrishockey11 wrote:Thanks all for your replies so far!

The Rockerverb is a proper Channel-Switcher, though a common complaint is that the Clean Channel is nowhere near loud enough to balance with the Dirty Channel. It is also a bit more modern-sounding than the OR50, though still much warmer and thicker in the midrange than the Triple Rectifiers of the world.
The OR50 would be my choice between the two for out-of-the-box stoner fuzz tones, but neither really have the low end that you might be after. A 100-watt amp would be a minimum for most people to get the low end for doom/stoner sounds at stage volumes.
