New Thunderverb 200 on its way!!!

Post by jfesta73 » Wed May 30, 2012 5:42 pm

Ive been exclusively playing dual recs for the past 15 years...and love them. Im playing in a stoner rock/ riffy kind of band right now, tuned to B and decided to try something different so I went with the Thunderverb 200. We play medium sized venues, so the 50 watt amp wouldn't have the type of headroom that I would like. I didn't get a cabinet yet, so I will be using it through a Marshall 1960A (on 100watts) until I really decide what I want to do. My only question is the footswitch...I know there are some aftermarket 3 button switches that I can get, but does Orange offer a switch that will work on the channel/ reverb/ attenuator? Can I get the Orange two button, and an Orange one button and use them together? I really am not a big fan of aftermarket products, but functionality is key...Anyway, I can't wait to turn that thing up!

I have the aftermarket 3-button.

it's as good or better than the Orange stuff (which I have for my AD30)...

get the aftermarket (mine is a switchdoctor), you won't be sorry.

Thanks!!! I looked up the switchdoctor, and it looks spot on...I am assuming you have had no issues with it. May be the way for me to go. Thanks again.

congrats!

I hope your music shop included a pair of complimentary ear plugs!

My only gripe with my orange dual footswitch (for my rockeverb, only need 2) is thst it needs 2 cable - 1 for each switch.

Otherwise it looks really cheesy in a very cool way! Love it. And extremely solid!

Yea...I like the cheesiness too. The switchdoctor looks pretty badass though.

Isn't the 1960a a 300w cabinet? Run that bad boy on full power!

Some were, some weren't. Depends if it had the 75W Celestion drivers fitted. If so thats a pity as they don't usually sound too great with Oranges! :(

Yes, mine is a 300W cabinet. I have heard though that the 1960's dont carry the Thunderverb well. I will play with it and find out...this thing can't get here fast enough. Waiting is B#$%sh#$!

Yeah, waiting isn't the best bit!

Problem with the G12T-75s is that wile they have decent top and bottom end response they have a pretty scooped midrange, and they just can't out the rich low mid Orange sounds. They are also fairly inefficient (not so loud) and the total effect is a lot less impressive than with many other speakers. When I hooked my OR120 up to that same type of cab it made it sound like a very weak version of itself. Nothing wrong with the cabs themselves, but long term I'd think about using different drivers. Just make sure you know which impedances you really need before ordering them though. You should at least be able to cover most of the costs by selling the '75s to a Marshall user as they sound decent enough with them.

Don't worry though, you'll still have fun when it arrives! :D

I am disappointed about the 1960a...it has been my go to cab for ever...sounds great with my Dual Rec and my JCM 900. Not sure if I am going to get the Orange 412 HP or a Black Market custom cab...we shall see...either way, like you said this will be fun.

G12T-75s do sound great with thunderverb 200 IMO (especially on mid gain settings). I bet you will be surprised.

TV200 doesn't get along well with 2x12 cabs -they tend to choke on the bass frequencies (mid and highs are messed up).

PS: On 100w it can overdrive a 1960 Marshall cab to its limits.

Ive had this thing for about 2 hours now....The 1960 cab is hanging just fine (although it sounds better in 100W, seems to get the speakers sweet spot). I love the gain, love the shape knob, don't know if I would ever use the reverb....It seems like it is all or none with the reverb, but thats cool because im not a reverb nut. Great tone...still need to dial in channel A. Haven't really found a great setting for me yet on A. Channel B was kind of easy. Volume at 1:00, Gain on 2:00 and Shape on 2:00. The attenuator is cool...good for when the sound guys says "Guitar WAY down!!!!". Im going to play with it more and see where I end up. Definitely a diverse head....It really can do anything.

Suprisingly, I am not finding it any louder than my Dual Rec...I guess once you get up to those volumes, any slight increase or decrease doesn't make much of a difference.
