Re: RV Band Mix Issues
It may depend on where you are standing. The Orange closed backs are very directional. Lower frequencies carry further. You are also listening for your part, and it may fit better in the mix if it does not stand out so much. Have someone stand out where the crowd would be when you do a sound check (...

Re: Bass Tone: What is your take on it?
Billy was kidding about the tuner pedal and so was I. I got my son a Genz-Benz a number of years ago because of the tube pre-amp and good EQ. I would think that I would not rely on a pedal for compression when there is rack gear that is so much better for only slightly more money. Thanks for the lin...

Re: Bass Tone: What is your take on it?
I'm with Billy, the only pedal should be your tuner. I think you should think in terms of an amp that has a good tube pre-amp, good EQ, and compression or rack gear that perform these tasks. When recording bass, if you isolate bass tracks, they never sound as good as you think they should, but in th...

Re: NPD: Tech 21 Oxford
As with any Tech 21 production, the EQ knobs are active and little tweak goes a long ways. The original SansAmp is able to give me the Black Face Fender sound I want and that is usable without having the cops pounding on my door.

Re: What sort of buyer are you?
Billy, the thrift store was probably happy to sell the Hammond for $10 if the buyer was willing to lift it. For all they knew, they had something very heavy and hard to move in their store.

Re: OT: Vinyl vs MP3
There is a radio station in my town that uses MP3s and another that uses CDs, very noticeable difference. Vinyl sounds even better than CDs, but I have trouble playing them in the car, which is when I have time to listen to music.

Re: Loud, clean head. On a budget.
Find a Silvertone 50 watt tube bass amp on E-bay. Very good and loud and the amp should run about $150. I have had one since 1974 and have used it as a guitar amp since. Two 6L6s and plenty loud.

Re: Does your Orange make your old amps sound good?
Different colors on an artist's palate. Contrast is good and more often than not it reaffirms your choices. We do it with guitars, too. It can be like running into an ex-girlfriend after not seeing her for a while. You remember the intial attraction, but after a while you remember why she is your EX...

Re: Trying To Pick Out An Orange
Unlike a Fender where you can crank the clean channel to torture levels before it distorts, the RV50 clean channel gets good power tube distortion at about 2 o'clock. From there on up you get tube compression (the same volume) with more warmth. It is relatively clean, but no Fender clean.

Re: RV50 mkii solo boost on dirty channel (high gain!)
Low tech solution is a volume pedal or the volume pot on your guitar. On the gain channel set the boost gain you want with the volume pot/pedal all the way up. Then cut back on the volume pot/pedal to where you want to play the rest of the time. The gain will drop off some with the volume.

Re: Tested a few new heads this weekend.
No pedal, no matter how sweet, can match the built-in sweetness that an amp has. Tried a Bogner 100 watt head once. Of the three channels, the clean channel sounded the best to me, but the price tag, which helped pay for the other two channels, which did little for me as I don't play that style, was...

Re: Optical compressor - good or bad?
The best compressor is dirty channel on the RV50 - tube compression. Optical compression works, but you need to know what type of compression you want before you buy. To know what you want, you have to know what kinds of compression there is out there. Optical is nice because it is smoother than dig...

Re: Bigger picks?
Violinist and celloists will pay almost as much attention to picking out their bow as to picking out their instrument. It is no different for guitarists and their picks. I have been using Fender mediums for decades. If I try a thin, or a thick, or a pick made of different material, it is just wrong....

Re: Having trouble with a two-guitar band...
Interesting thread. The first time I mixed a recording for a four-piece band, I found that when I rolled off the low end of the guitars, the mix sounded twenty times better. I would agree that EQ will do 90% of the work. Recently heard a band with two guitarists. Both had LPs playing through 50 watt...
